Iontophoresis – A Simple Therapy For Curing Hyperhidrosis
For unknown reasons, Iontophoresis seem to help in the management of hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating when other standard methods don’t work at all.
Iontophoresis is a treatment method for patients of hyperhidrosis. Although doctors are still trying to figure out how such a simple technique can work wonders for sufferers of hyperhidrosis, most have no reservation with recommending this technique for their patients. The rate of success for this technique is pegged at 83%, which is pretty high given that it is a technique that is barely understood. This just means that 8 in every 10 people who have undergone this treatment experience significant improvement with their condition.
This treatment involves the use of a simple device called Iontophoresis machine which delivers low current via an electrolyte solution, usually tap water, to treat the skin. This very simple method of delivering charged particles to the skin has been around for many many years.
How this treatment works, no one knows. A widely accepted explanation is that the electric current and the solution used force the skin to microscopically thicken, thus making it difficult for the skin to sweat. In this therapy, sweat production is often turned off dramatically. This treatment provides the relief from excessive sweating that other treatments just cannot give.
How to use Iontophoresis?
The hands and feet, whichever is exhibiting symptoms of hyperhidrosis, are immersed into the electrolyte for about 20 to 40 minutes. The machine then sends mild electrical charge to the water to charge the minerals in it. This process is repeated once every two days for about a week or so, or until the desired results are achieved. After the desired dryness has been achieved, patients routinely undergo this therapy for maintenance, which often requires once every week treatment to once every month treatment. Patients are again subjected to the treatment once the effects wear off.
The composition of water varies from one part of the world to another. In some locations, water is too soft that there is not enough minerals in it, making it quite ineffective when used for Iontophoresis therapy. If you think the water in your area does not meet the appropriate mineral concentration required by this procedure, it is advisable to add about 1 teaspoon of baking soda to the water. If this does not show effects on your skin, you can ask your doctor for a prescription medication which you can add to the electrolyte. Consult your doctor about the best anticholinergic you can use for this treatment. In general, adding an anticholinergic will help you manage your problems with sweat easier.
Iontophoresistherapy generally pulls in high success rate. Although it can be a home-care treatment which you may do by yourself, it often requires a learned technique which might prove very difficult to learn without help.
