Theraputic Grade
Work experience in my gap year..suggestions?

I am in grade 12 this year and I am planning to have a year off (gap year) next year and gain as much horsey experience as possible. In that year I am hoping to save madly and earn money for my university course. (Bachelor of Equine Science)

What I was wondering is what would be the best way of getting a maximum amount of horse experience. I KNOW that kind of work is thankless usually and low-paid if paid at all. I just want to get varied experience. I am most definetly intending to continue my lessons at least twice a week, and am planning on buying a horse at the end of that year for uni.

I am most likely gong to get a job at my riding school, and have been offered volunteer work at a theraputic riding centre next year. I also currently work at a childrens horse riding camp on school holidays.

What are some other options/reccomendations so I can get some wide spread experience in horses? I am not expecting to get paid for any of it (except my job)

Are there any private stables around? You may be able to get a job at one of these helping out as a working student. It’s a great way to gain experience and learn about the different ways people have of working with horses. It does sound like you have a good gap year going as it is! Volunteer at veterinaries that deal with horses. You can learn a lot this way about that end of things. Also, attend as many shows as you can. You don’t need to compete for this, just watch and ask a lot of questions. Take a camera and take lots of pix of things that interest you and keep a journal of what you see and learn. Also check with shoers and see if they need someone to ride along and help. It’s a great way to see a variety of things and hear a good deal of interesting stuff, plus get you familiar with the horse people in the area. hard work, but enjoyable.
