what should I do if I’m behind in organic chemistry?
If I fall behind in organic chemistry, how can I catch up? I want to set a solid foundation for this semester and next semester.
We use textbooks and “pogil” workbooks in class.
Should I outline the textbooks from the beginning & do the in-chapter problems? Or is there a better way?
It is difficult to predict how well a student might do in organic chemistry because different professors emphasize different aspects. However, I have had very good results with my students on the ACS organic chemistry exam by emphasizing reaction mechanisms. I had raised my class average by 20 percentile points on it.
Many questions that are posted on Yahoo and other forums are easily answered if a student knew the reaction mechanism. This provides reinforcement for my basic belief in the value of mechanisms.
I have written a number of blog articles or answered student questions on how to study. I argue that our brains are basically pattern matching machines. We train it to recognize and use different patterns. We can train a dog to associate the command “sit” with the action of sitting and a reward for doing so. Thus a dog can learn to sit upon hearing the command. We can learn a language by associating sounds to objects and actions. We are thus able to assemble sounds into meaning in speech.
I think that is what we do in learning. We connect ideas together. They may be concrete or abstract as in the case of chemistry. Our brains are most effective at doing so if the ideas can be linked with a logic. That is why I emphasized reaction mechanisms as mechanisms are simply an explanation of how a reaction takes place. By virtue of it being logical, students can recognize similar reactions more easily. It becomes like learning French if you know Spanish.
I had a student ask a similar question to the one you have asked. Because he was using the same textbook I had used for my class, it was easier to guide him. However, I suggested he simply work through the examples in “A Guide to Organic Chemistry Mechanisms©”. I suggested that once he knew how reactions proceeded, he could then make any tables he might like to make. He lost interest in doing so once he knew how reactions actually took place. He aced ochem.
