Essential oils are the pure “essence” of a plant and when used properly can provide both psychological and physical benefits.
Essential oils are concentrated extracts taken from the roots, leaves, seeds, or flowers of plants. Each contains its own mix of active ingredients, and this mix determines what the oil is used for. There are other essential oils which are used for physical healing, like treatment of swelling and fungal infections. Aromatherapy massage therapy with essential oils (combined with medications or therapy) may benefit people with depression. The scents are thought by some to stimulate positive emotions in the area of the brain responsible for memories and emotions, but the benefits seem to be related to relaxation caused by the scents and the massage.
Chemical compounds from some aromatherapy essential oils have shown antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. There are some evidence that show that the citrus essential oils can strengthen the immune system and peppermint essential oil can help with digestion. Fennel, aniseed, sage, and clary-sage essential oils have estrogen-like compounds, which may help relieve symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and menopause.
Aromatherapy essential oils are widely used in shampoos, lotions, facial products, soaps, perfumes, shower gels and other natural hygiene products. Also, essential oils are blended for their therapeutic synergistic abilities.
