How do I set up a network between two PCs with an ethernet cable?
I have a desktop running Windows XP Home, a laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium, and an ethernet cross over cable. How do I set up the computers so I can share files between them? Neither are on any type of network (The only internet I have is dialup). Both have a base 10/100 network card.
The most complete way to do this is to:
1. Using the X-over cable, connect the two PCs together by plugging it into the network card located in each PC. (I’m assuming both have it as otherwise, this whole exercise is moot)
2. On both PCs, go to the Network Properties (in Vista, go to Network Connections in Control Panel). Set IP addresses for both, that belong to the same subnet…
Eg.
On XP PC, set 192.168.99.1 as IP address, and 255.255.255.253 as subnet mask
On Vista PC, set 192.168.99.2 as IP address, and 255.255.255.253 as subnet mask
For Vista PC, you need to set it in the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)
3. Make sure ‘File and Printer Sharing’ is checked for both PCs.
4. On each respective computer, share out the folders you want as sharable, and make sure you grant read/write rights to ‘Everyone’.
Once done, reboot PCs, and go to Network or Network Neighbourhood. You should be able to see the shared folder of the other PC. Clicking on it will request that you enter any password that you had previously set (when sharing out the folder in the computer you are trying to access).
