Most Car Buyers Continue to Choose Silver
Silver continues to be the favorite color for new cars in North America. Around 57% of new cars are either silver or black.
This (2009) is the ninth consecutive year that silver has been at the top when it comes to car color choice. But the silver that is sprayed onto cars these days is much more advanced than the paint used when it began to become popular. Technological improvements in paint and spray technology have enabled car makers to significantly expand their paint palettes.
Although silver, black and white remain firm favorites with new car buyers the Ford car company have had succes with varied eye catching colors including Molten Orange and Grabber Blue. There is a new, compact Ford Fiesta due to arrive in the US in 2010 and this will be made avaiable in a range of much brighter, vibrant colors including bright green and red as well as the popular silver, black and white.
The strong European small car market tends to have more color variety with around 37% of small vehicles sporting red, green, brown or blue paintwork.
Car makers have also turned their attention to making their car interiors more attractive by using varied accent colors. New paints are being introduced that include glass particles that make the paint shimmer and shine.
Its well known that different colors can have a psychological influence. Red, for example, has been said to stimulate the body and mind whereas blue is believed to have a calming, soothinig effect. There is some debate among psychologists regarding the effects of color therapy.
It’s interesting to note that around 15 years ago the most popular color was green with only 1% of new cars in silver. Color fashions clearly change over time making it near impossible to predict the next hot color.
