Is tea or natural green tea leaves good for plants?

A chinese tea seller told me that dumping my used tea leaves on plants is good for them. Is this true or was she just trying to sell more tea?

Tea leaves are acid, so yes, you can sprinkle them around any acid-loving plants in your garden. They won’t grow mouldy any faster than other organic top-dressings you could use: they’ll dry out quickly enough, anyway. That said, it is generally better to rake them into the soil instead of just dropping them on top.

FYI, coffee grounds can be used in the same way. Some coffee shops even bag up their grounds and give them away to gardeners for free.

I wouldn’t buy tea leaves just to fertilize my plants with, unless it was specially to make an organic insecticide or something. I compost my *used* loose tea leaves and tea bags all the time, though, after I’ve drunk the tea.
