Will silver cleaner clean ONLY silver?
I make jewelry and someone gave me this necklace with silver and hematite …. I would assume there’s about 100 “silver” beads … but I’m not completely sure if they’re silver or just metal … so I put them in a silver cleaner and the tarnish came off beautifly … but does that mean they really are SILVER?
Not necessarily. It means the metal oxide in the necklace wants to reduce to it’s elemental state more than the metal in your tarnish remover. You’d need to check a chart of standard reduction potentials to get a better idea of your possibly unknown metal in the necklace. It’s a redox problem.
