Singer Ronnie James Dio Passes Away At 67
Legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio has passed away at the age of 67. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in late 2009. Dio was a legend in hard rock and heavy metal. He had been the singer for Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and was successful in his own right with solo works. Along with the recent passing of Peter Steele, this has so far been a bad year for metal.
Ronnie James Dio
Ronnie James Dio was born in 1942, in New Hampshire as Ronald James Padovona. He attributed his vocal prowess and technique to having played several brass instruments in his youth. He formed the band Elf in the early 70s, after more than a decade of grinding out a living around New England. Elf was discovered by Deep Purple, who took them out on several tours as a support band.
Rainbow
After Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple, he got Elf to record as his backup band, with Ronnie as lead singer, and that band became Rainbow. Aside from his musical contributions, he also is credited for popularizing the “metal horns,” otherwise known as “devil horns,” which he picked up from his Italian grandmother. The hand gesture is called “malocchio,” which gained popularity as “the horns.” {It was adopted as the sign of The Metal}.
Black Sabbath
After leaving Rainbow due to creative differences, Ronnie James Dio auditioned for Black Sabbath, as they had just fired Ozzy Osbourne. Ronnie James Dio was hired almost right away, and recorded the albums “Mob Rules” and “Heaven and Hell.” Both were well received critically and commercially, despite the iconic original singer having been discharged. However, Dio began having creative differences with his new band and after the release of the live record “Live Evil” set out on his own.
Holy Diver
Ronnie James Dio assembled a band for a solo record, which was called “Holy Diver,” long considered a classic. The title track, along with “Rainbow in the Dark” were radio hits and fan favorites. He continued releasing solo albums until 2006 and briefly reunited with Black Sabbath in 1992 for the “Dehumanizer” album.
Heaven and Hell
While Ozzy Osbourne was taking time off from Black Sabbath, the rest of the band got Ronnie James Dio back into the fold. They decided to tour under a different name, to avoid conflicts with Ozzy. The band was redubbed, Heaven and Hell, and Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice hit the road, playing numerous dates and releasing a live album of old hits and “The Devil You Know” in 2009, a brand new studio album. The band went on hiatus when Dio was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2009. On the Dio website on May 16, 2010, his wife announced that he had passed away. Ronnie James Dio was a brilliant performer and musician, and easily one of the most influential of the last 30 years and will be sorely missed.
