Hay Fever

Hay Fever

Dry air could make some illnesses worse

It’s no secret that living and working in damp conditions can cause illness, but the same is also true for the opposite. Many health problems are caused by air that is too dry, and could be easily avoided by regulating the air in the home and workplace. The use of air conditioners not only helps to control the temperature and purity of the air but also ensures that humidity is kept at the right levels to avoid these health issues. Dehydration is the most obvious consequence of living and working in a dry environment but there are many other conditions that are often made worse by this.

Asthma – Homes and offices with double glazed windows can get especially dry and hot when the heating is on through the winter. That dried-our feeling you get from using central heating for long periods of time is unpleasant for anyone, but people who suffer from respiratory illnesses often find it can make them feel a whole lot worse. Installing a portable air conditioner with a humidifier in the home or office makes all the difference as it injects the necessary moisture back into the air.

Dry skin and hair – The air needs water just the same as we do, and if conditions are too dry it will try to replace its supply by drawing moisture from our skin, plants, wooden furniture and other sources. This leaves the skin dry, rough and flaky, and the hair brittle and easily broken.

Hay fever and allergies – Hay fever actually has nothing to do with hay, and affects one in 10 people across central Europe. The real problem is airborne irritants such as pollen and animal hairs, invisible to the eye but they are everywhere, especially in dry warm conditions during the summer. The use of a ceiling fan will make the room feel fresher and less dusty, but if the air is too dry it will only blow pollen around even more. The best way to stop these particles is to inject more moisture into the air and weigh them down. As any hay fever sufferer will tell you, they are least affected by their allergies just after rain, while the air is still moist.

Eyes – Your eyes are probably the most likely thing to be affected by overly dry air. The moisture in the eye evaporates quickly in dry air, leaving it irritated and sometimes painful. Contact lens wearers are most familiar with this as the lenses become an irritation if they are allowed to dry out, and can sometimes pick up small particles of dust.

Tiredness – Dry eyes give the illusion of tiredness, but dry air also affects our breathing and our ability to take in oxygen. A healthy amount of moisture in the air is needed for our lungs to be able to extract enough oxygen. Decreased productivity often occurs as a result of tiredness and lethargy, which are signs of reduced oxygen levels in the blood.
