Can a 50 mL pipette be used to measure 60 mL?
We can’t seem to agree on this. I work at a cGMP facility, so we can’t just make these decisions on a whim. I need to be able to back it up. The question came up when one of our techs used a 50 mL disposable pipette tip to measure 60 mLs. It is graduated up to 50 mL, and then it starts over and counts out 10 more mLs after that. Is it accurate to this volume??? Thanks!
For clarity, I know it is possible to measure 60 mLs by measuring 30 & 30, or 50 & 10. But my question is since a 50 mL pipette tip is graduated up to 60 mL, is it accurate up to that volume?
Again, I AM NOT asking how to measure 60 mL. I can add. I am asking about accuracy.
Probably.
1) Call the manufacturer and ask about their calibration for the extra 10mL.
2) Test yourself. Sample several pipettes by weighing 60mL. Compare the results to the technique you are using. Repeat for every lot of pipettes.
If this will save cost and labor, it is worth the step of checking it out to the precision you require.
