Filling a hole in ceiling (plaster w/ drywall joint showing through)?
I bought some vinyl Spackle that said it could be used to fill holes in a plaster ceiling. The hole is about two inches around and has a few little holes around it, but they do not go all the way through the plaster to drywall like the main one. at first the spackle would not adhere all that well to the drywall underneath the plaster, so I spread the diameter of the vinyl spackling to an area about 5 inches or so. this worked but it is not setting up and is getting a gel feel to it. it is upstairs so it’s kinda chilly, would this be why? also someone told me not to skim little holes with it (after I had already done it to the small surrounding holes) why is this a problem? and is the vinyl spackling I used going to work the way I need it to? So, you have plaster over drywall on the ceiling? I’ve never used vinyl spackle for anything, so I can’t be of much help with advice about how it will or will not work. What I can tell you is that I would have purchased a small can of premixed drywall mud and used that to fill the holes with. It’s the same stuff the drywallers use to fill the cracks between two sheets. It works easy, works well when you squeeze it down to nothing to make an edge, and it drys quickly to a hard surface that you can sand, in probably a couple hours. I’d dig the vinyl spackle out of there and use the drywall mud.
