Natural Flu Remedies

Vitamins
Vitamins fight the flu by strengthening the body’s own immune response and by accelerating healing. Vitamin C, Zinc and Vitamin D have been shown to help individuals get well from flu. High doses of vitamin C every day may considerably reduce cold and flu symptoms and can even reduce the length of a cold or flu. Vitamin C will help keep you healthy as it acts as a cell-protecting antioxidant and an immune system booster. Zinc on the other hand, an important nutrient that is used in the production of hormones support the immune system to combat viruses. However, zinc must be taken at the first sign of infection in order for it to significantly help reduce the period of illness. And Vitamin D also plays a role in the proper functioning of our immune system. Taking high doses of Vitamin D during flu infection can significantly enhance the  immune system to better combat the viral illness.

Tea
There are several types of tea which work as effective flu remedies; one is ginger tea and the other is green tea. Ginger has been shown to have antiviral properties; thus helping remove influenza virus. Drinking a warm cup of ginger tea also promotes sweating that helps reduce fever. A good ginger tea is made by mixing a teaspoon of ginger juice or 2 tablespoons of grated fresh ginger and boiling it in 2 cups of water for 15 minutes; you can also add honey for taste. On the other hand, green tea helps fight off infection by strengthening the immune function as it contains high amounts of antioxidants. They act as immune system stimulants that promote an increase in the production of more virus-fighting cells. This health-enhancing tea can be prepared by steeping a green tea bag in 6 oz. of boiled water for 2 to 3 minutes to maximize the tea’s antioxidant action.

Echinacea
The echinacea herb is a popular dietary supplement that is used to prevent or reduce the duration of the common cold or flu. The herb works by activating the body’s T-cells which are a vital part of the immune response. It also works as an anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and immunostimulant.

Garlic
Even though garlic has been said to contribute to influenza treatment, its generally acknowledged character is preventing the start of infection. The use of garlic against  flu seems to be most useful when taken before the infection is caught, or immediately after the symptoms begin to appear. Garlic has an antiseptic property which is used as an excellent treatment for flu, it will be best to take it fresh but you can also combine it with your food.

Holy Basil
Holy basil leaves are also great flu remedies. You can make a basil concoction by boiling 12 grams of basil leaves in about half a liter of water until half of the water is left. It will soothe your throat and strengthen your immune system. You can also mix the concoction with a cup of milk, one teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of cardamom.
