Alternative to Custom Ski Boot foot beds?
When I was in buying new ski boots, the employee said that I really should have custom foot beds made because of where the weight falls on my foot. The only problem is they cost upwards of $100. What is the best cheap alternative to having custom foot beds made?
Footbed work can cost as little as $35 up to as much as $200 (maybe more.) It really depends on your foot. 90% of the general population has some imbalance in their stance. In most cases something as simple as a $35 Spenco or Superfeet insert will do the trick. If you have something like a high instep, low arch, high arch, low volume foot, etc, etc. then the cost can go up. Most orthodics shops simply take a new footbed and bulk it up with foam of different density in the places you need extra support. Something like that will run you $40-$50. Molded footbeds are nice, but not absolutely necessary. These can be pricy. They are worth it if you spend a lot of time skiing.
The foundation for good skiing begins with a properly fitted boot. Tell the bootfitter what your budget is. They’ll work with you. If they don’t, go to another shop.
