So many of Spain’s notable painters emerged and became famous during its Golden Age and on this era, most Spanish painters were able to make their mark in different selections of art forms all over the world. One particular master who made an enormous impact on painting as an art form is Diego Velasquez who is definitely one of the most famous and influential painters of Spain. King Philip IV and his chief minister are only a few of the powerful friends Velasquez has; he made artworks for the royal family and to people with position and high nobility, showcasing his style and skills in all his paintings.
Born in a middle class family back in June 5, 1599 and the eldest in a brood of six, Diego Velasquez displayed mush talent as a young artist at a very early age. He began his formal lessons of paintings by age eleven under the teachings of master painter Francisco Pacheco, and later became a master painter himself receiving his certification from the painters’ guild only at the age of eighteen and with it he was allowed to work as a professional painter. He later became the husband of the daughter of Francisco Pacheco and supported his new family through his paintings, and because of his skill in painting he was able to earn enough money to buy a good house and another house to be rent out.
Because of his talent in art and the pieces he produced, Diego Velasquez became well-known all throughout the country and even abroad and also became one of the country’s most influential personalities The Marques de Spinola himself was in awe at the splendor of realism portrayed in the painting The Surrender of Breda; the amount of details that went into painting the expression on every face, the threads of the fabrics, the tint on the skin, and everything about the painting was just magnificent. Another creation which could be the most famous one credited to his name, is The Maids in Honour or Las Meninas; amazingly, he painted himself inside the artwork, quietly working on a canvas at the background.
These are just but an overlook of Spain’s most celebrated master painter, his works and life is truly an inspiration to many people; he truly is deserves to be called one of the exceptional painter that ever lived.
