Home Remedies for Eczema – Effective and Less Costly Eczema Treatment Alternatives to Medicines
Atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema, is a chronic skin condition characterized by dry, very itchy skin and rashes. The condition comes and goes, and there is no known permanent cure for it. During an active eczema flare-up, affected areas of the skin may appear dry, scaly, red, or leathery.
There may be skin rashes that sometimes ooze and then crust before healing. Eczema rashes often appear on skin folds, behind the knees, and around the elbows. But they too can appear on the face, especially on the cheeks and around the eyes. When this is the case, the skin condition can cause very real frustration, as the person may be forced to stay at home for several days until his skin clears up.
The exact cause of eczema has not been established, but medical science points to an inherited defect in the immune system as the probable cause. It has been found out that a person who has eczema is likely to have other family members with related immune system or inflammatory conditions, such as asthma and hay fever.
Strengthening the immune function is therefore one way to manage eczema. Some immunomodulator medicines may be prescribed to stabilize the immune system and decrease the severity of the symptoms of eczema. But in many cases, simple antihistamines and corticosteroid creams and ointments are all it takes to relieve the rashes and itching associated with eczema.
For those who prefer natural cures, there are alternatives to these medicines that work just as well. Natural treatments can in fact be preferable because they don’t cost as much and they are safer. They do not have the side-effects associated with eczema medicines, which can range from something as benign as drowsiness to more serious potential side-effects like cataracts, hypertension, osteoporosis, and immune system disturbances.
Below are some home remedies for eczema which have been proven to relieve the symptoms of the skin disorder:
• Using wet or cold compresses to relieve itching, break the itch-scratch cycle, and help prevent a full-blown eczema flare-up
• Wearing loose, cool, light, and soft clothes, such as cotton. One must avoid irritating the skin further with heavy, woolly and scratchy clothing.
• Regular moisturizing to avoid skin dryness. Having dry skin can induce a flare-up of eczema.
• Avoiding triggers that can worsen an eczema outbreak, or induce one during remission. Triggers are different for eczema sufferers, but the most common ones include certain food items (like eggs, milk, dairy products, peanuts and seafood), heat, low humidity, perspiration, stress, and anxiety.
• Avoiding using harsh soaps and commercial skin products.
These home remedies for eczema not only ease the skin condition during a flare-up. They also prevent future outbreaks and lengthen the time between flare-ups.
Herbal creams and gels are also popular home remedies for eczema. These topical remedies typically contain extracts of licorice, chamomile, and witch hazel, which help to soothe the skin and relieve rashes and itching. Besides these, various homemade concoctions can also relieve the symptoms of eczema when applied directly on affected skin areas. Some examples of these homemade remedies are:
• Nutmeg paste
• Pounded blueberry leaves
• Crushed dandelion leaves and spearmint leaves, mixed with a few drops of oil
• A mixture of camphor and sandalwood paste (using equal amounts of each ingredient)
• Virgin coconut oil (or coconut oil)
• Turmeric powder
• Mashed papaya seeds
• Bitter neem leaves
One can experiment with these ingredients, mix them up, and see which one or which blend of two or more from the list produces the greatest relief. These ingredients are safe as long as they are used in moderation.
