Keep An Eye On Your Cholesterol Ratio
Health is something that we should always be focused on and you need to keep an eye out for any signs that you might be in some kind of health danger. Use your cholesterol ratio as an indicator and make sure that you eat the right foods and that is as healthy as possible.
This ratio is precisely calculated to make sure that you have an accurate reading. It is achieved by dividing the amount of HDL cholesterol into the total cholesterol. This is the way that the American Heart Association says it should be done and the organization also points out that the optimum ratio is considered to be at the level of 3. 5:1. If you go any higher than 5:1 then there is a problem.
The ratio is so important because it is one of the main ways in which your doctor and of course you, the individual can determine whether there is likely to be any heart risk. So you know that if you fall into the window that is regarded as dangerous that you have to take some precautions.
It is important that you check your ratio regularly and about every six months should suffice. This is the recommendation that most doctors would put forward. If they don’t like the look of the ratio then treatment is obvious. This could be a course of cholesterol med or it could be a nutritional plan designed to bring down your cholesterol levels.
Medication might seem like the easier path but at the end of the day you should choose to go for the eating plan is you have the luxury of choice. This will mean that you get to avoid having to take the medication for the rest of your life which is likely to happen if you go down that route.
Make sure that you try to eat healthy foods as a means of hopefully never having to worry about your cholesterol in the first place. There are a variety of foods that cut down cholesterol. Make sure though that you avoid foods such as too much fatty, red meat and also try to avoid butter and ice cream.
The diet can be a challenge to start with but you will soon get used to it and of course you should focus on the foods that are allowed. Fish is a great source of the right types of fats and omega oils which are essential in our every day diet. Veggies are also very important and then of course you can enjoy foods such as walnuts and oat bran. The last one can also help with your digestion if this an issue for you. All of this will help your cholesterol ratio.
