Aromatherapy Oil Diffusers
Aromatherapy is the alternative medicine method in which the use of essential oils are used in effecting a person’s mood. There are many different ways to use these oils for therapy. Massage therapists can blend them into their massage oils, creams and lotions or diffuse them throughout their room. There are some incredibly simple ways to diffuse oils and some extravagent… Here is a blog that will explain the advatages and disadvantages of a few.
On-the-go Diffusion: Take an everyday tissue, whether it’s a tissue paper, or a cotton ball, they even sell aromatherapy inhaler sticks that you can carry with you on the go. Simply place three to four drops of your chosen essential oil onto it and you will have a quick therapy to calm your nerves(Lavandar), or to help jog your memory during a test (Rosemary).
Advantage: You can use this method anywhere! It’s inexpensive and is easily transportable.
Disadvantage: This method does not emit much aroma and doesn’t last as long as others.
Steam Diffusion: This method requires you taking some water, bringing it to a low boil. Drop about 10 drops of oil in the water (or to your liking). The steam that evaporates, evaproates with the oil and aroma in the room. This is useful to help clear congestion (euclaptus or chamomile).
Advatange: This is a quick method for diffusion oil and aroma into a room.
Disadvantage: This method works fast and disappears fast. Also, using this type of heat may alter the constituents ( one of the constant parts that make up the oil), altering the therapeutic benefit i.e. may not be as optimal as using cold air diffusing.
Candle Diffusion: Burning a candle that excrets the aroma throughout a room.
Advantage: This method can be used anywhere you may burn a candle.
Disadvantage: Candles require fire and essential oils are flammable, so be careful when burning them! we wouldn’t want you to catch your salon on fire!!!!
Lamp Rings: Lamp rings are a tera-cotta (an Italian clay baked, unglazed ceramic) ring that sets directly onto a light bulb (not the eco bulbs). It has a grooved lip around the lid that the essential oils goes in to. The heat from the light bulb heats the essential oil in the Lamp Ring and the oil is diffused in the room.
Advantage: A very inexpensive way to diffuse oils.
Disadvtange: You have to be careful with not getting any oil onto the lightbulb. When oil gets onto the lightbulb, it can cause the bulb to break. Again, using the heat from the lightbulb can change the constinuents of the oils, hence changing the therapeutic benefit of some oils.
Candle Diffuser: This is a diffuser that uses a tea light or any form of candle that gently heats the essential oil to help diffuse the aroma throughout the room. A candle diffuser is normally ceramic or metal that has a little opening space for a candle and a little tray above it to put the oil in. Candle diffusers come in all shapes and sizes that can work as a piece of art and a candle diffuser.
Advantage: Candle diffusers are long lasting and inexpensive. They can also be easily transported and can act as a decorative piece of art.
Disadvantage: Again, using this form of heating an oil can change the constiuents in the therapuetic benefit. Also, you have to be careful with handling changing out the candles. Remember, they’re hot! It is very important to use the pure essential oil without the carrier oil such as jojoba, add about 3 teaspoons of water then about 5 to 6 drops depending on how potent you want the room to smell and the size of the container. If it is a small container, be sure to keep an eye on it bacuase it will evaporate rather quickly, and again, do not touch the top after it has been buring!!
Nebulizer: This device takes essential oils and breaks them into seperate molecules before dispersing the smaller molecules into the room. These smaller molecules can be more readily absorbed by the lungs and thus create greater therapeutic value than by use of other methods.
Advantage: Nebulizers have the greatest therapuetic benefit because it breaks down the oils into smaller particles, intensifying the therapeutic benefit.
Disadvantage: Some nebulizers are very expensive and easily breakable. Some oils that are thicker in consistance can clog certain types of nebulizers.
Whichever method you decide to use as a massage therapist, or just at home for yourself, aromatherapy really does work! I use a combination of lavendar and patchouli to help me fall asleep everynight.
Do you have any good combinations of oils for any certain ailment that you use? What method of oil diffusing do you use?
