A quick guide to pianos and keyboards
When most of us think about a piano, we think of a concert pianist playing a grand piano, but there are two or three types of piano, here we will discuss them, from the grand piano, to the upright piano to the digital keyboard.
First item on the list is the grand piano itself. The longer strings and huge size of the grand piano help it to achieve its sound as well as reducing the low-end frequencies and harmonics. Smaller piano’s, such as the baby grand piano and the boudoir grand piano will use thicker strings to keep the tension, which allows for clarity in the sound, as string tension would be lowered using the concert grand piano’s string, making it sound muddy and possibly unplayable. Size can go from 2-3ms for the concert grand piano, to the 1-2ms of a boudoir, to the slightly smaller (but still large) grand piano.
The piano that most people will most likely have when they mentioning having a piano is the ‘upright’ piano. The upright piano is named as such due to its frame and strings being housed inside the piano horizontally, which allows to to slightly smaller, standing in at 45 inches and more.
The electric piano, often mistaken for another keyboard (sadly) also has the foot pedals which control frequency and pitch that a keyboard doesnt have. But they honestly dont sound as good as an acoustic piano, even with the ‘wonders of modern technology’.
And as for those digital keyboards…..
Much smaller, cheaper, easier to carry around than a piano, the keyboard is the closest most of us will come to owning anything like a piano. Digital techonology allows the keyboard to carry hundreds of sounds within its frame, from steel drum sound, to church organ to grand piano, all in one shell.
