For a science project we have to make a necklace that weighs about 1 newton. At school we have balance beams that run in grams. How many grams in a newton? THX!
Doesn’t quite work that way. If I answer the question as you’ve worded it, the answer is zero. There are zero grams in a newton. If we’re talking about “Fig Newtons” (a cookie by Nabisco), those have an average mass of about 15grams.
A newton is a unit of force. A gram is a unit of mass. Weight is a measurement of force due to gravity, and is related to the mass of the object. The terms are NOT interchangeable nor are they measurements of the same thing.
If we make some assumptions, we can calculate the probable mass of an object on Earth that weighs 1 Newton.
F(g) = Mg
F(g) = force due to gravity in Newtons
M = mass of object in kilograms
g = acceleration due to gravity
(standard acceleration due to gravity at sea level on Earth is about 9.8m/s^2)
F(g) we can set to 1 Newton for this.
g = 9.8m/s^2
F(g) = Mg
1 N = M (9.8m/s^2)
M = 1/9.8 Kg.
M = 0.10204Kg = 102.04g
