How To Care For A Cut On Your Horse
Horses must be kept in areas devoid of sharp edges that may accidentally cause harm to them. However, we all know that accidents happen and even the most cautious horse owner can still end up with a horse that gets cut. Treating a cut on your horse as soon as it has occurred is important as the longer it is left the trickier it becomes to take care of it.
If your horse injured itself, the first step is to examine the damage. If the wound is deep or large in diagonal it is essential to call a vet. Fresh wounds can quickly be stitched up before infection sets in.
Whether the cut is treatable by you or not, it is important to take some immediate action. You’ll first need to catch loose horses and get them locked down in a safe place. Injured horses can often behave erratically and can be harmful for themselves or other horses.
Whenever you can, you should trim the hair around the cut. This will prevent dirt and hair getting stuck in the wound and infecting it further.
Wash the cut with running water and an antiseptic solution. Do not use normal shampoo to clean the area.
Antiseptic wound cream can be applied to the wound once it is cleaned. It is advisable to ask your vet which product to use. Aloe Vera and tea tree oil is very commonly used on small shallow horse cuts. Natural creams are less likely to irritate a horse’s wounds.
If the wound is large or at risk of opening up again, you may want to cover it up. Disposable cotton wool and veterinary wraps are useful as you can cut them open and dispose them after use. Make sure you constantly change the wrap as well as continuously clean and treat the horse’s wound.
Never hesitate to ask your vet for advice on matters you are unsure of. Properly treated cuts heal faster and leave a smaller mark. Cuts left untreated can lead to infection and even death.
