Is it possible for a dog to just be mean?
I know there are ailments that can make people irritable, can this happen to animals as well? Or can dogs have mental disorders such as autism or bipolar disorder disorder?
Let me add, I just want to know and am not experiencing this personally.
In all my years of training dogs. I have seen a few with what I call mental disorders. But in dogs I’ve yet to see one who can’t be fixed. The hardest of these cases are fearful, and fear biting dogs. They’re almost psychotic in their fear of everything. I once worked with a dog who was fearful of…well everything. But literally would have a panic attack if it were near a stick. Sounds like somebody abused him, maybe beat him with a stick right? No…he tripped over a stick one day in his yard and ever since then would bark at sticks that were far away and literally freeze up if he happened to notice he managed to accidentally step over one…It was pretty odd. But he’ll fetch a stick now. Dog “mental disorders” are reversible as far as I know. I’ve seen some “psychotic” dogs who’re easily fixed with some training, I’ve yet to come across a dog who was blindly vicious and irreversible. I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, it just might, but in all of my experience I haven’t seen it yet. Hope I helped and as always feel free to e-mail me.
Bozema? That’s true, and it’s a sad thing. If you call yourself a trainer, but can’t “fix” a problem that would be easily fixed by my 17 year old employee after she had a few weeks of training on how to handle protection trained German Shepherds that weigh as much as she does you’re guilty of false advertising! The information on how to train dogs, on how to reverse behaviors is out there. Unfortunately, people with extremely limited experience pass on second hand advice and tout it as gospel. Do you know how many times today alone I’ve seen somebody talk about 2 big working dogs fighting and some genius goes “Get a spray bottle with water in it and spray them and say no!” and got a million thumbs up? Yeah, that might work with 2 pomeranians who don’t want to get their hair wet, not 2 110-120 pound male Rottweilers. I will talk anybody through how to train any dog that is out of control to the best of my abilities. I’ll do my best to make sure they don’t get hurt (for example I may say muzzle the dog). But NO I can’t promise anybody that they won’t get hurt. If they’re not willing to possibly get nipped or scratched by a muzzled dog, or if their dog is so bad it won’t let them put a muzzle on then at least please search for somebody who can help! Call your local Schutzhund club, maybe a trainer there can help and Sch trainers are the best you’re going to find that are easy to find. Most people who train for Sch understand dog training way way more than “dog trainers” at Petco and the ones in the newspaper or phone book. If all else fails, and/or you’re not willing to do what must be done, put the dog to sleep…and if you don’t feel guilty for having a physically healthy animal die at your hand because you couldn’t handle him/her, there’s a little something wrong with you.
